Punjab: Sham marriage gang busted, 5 held

PATIALA: Police have busted a gang of cheats who used to arrange sham marriages to blackmail and dupe innocent youths in Fatehgarh Sahib district.Police have also recovered Rs 15000 from the five accused identified as Sukhwinder Singh alias Sukha, Sohan Singh, Bhupinder Singh, Sarbjit Kaur and Kiranjot Kaur.Police said that two other members of the gang namely Kuldeep Kaur and Mohar Singh were absconding.SSP Amneet Kondal said that the fraud was unearthed after one Harpreet Singh, a resident of Jhampur village complained to the police that some people were blackmailing him on the pretext of registering fake rape or dowry case after his wife left him.Kondal said that after conducting an enquiry, police arrested five persons in this regards.During the preliminary interrogation, it came to the light that the gang members used to lure young people into marriages at nominal charges..
