Health department issues Nipah alert

more-inThe State Health Department has put on alert its district officials and increased surveillance following reported Nipah viral infection in neighbouring Kerala. Since the disease could spread through handling pigs, animal husbandry and forest department officials too had been involved, the official said. The Health Department is also awaiting information about the origin of the infection. But the country has so far reported outbreaks only in a couple of localities – Siliguri and Nadia in West Bengal – on two separate occasions. The threat to the State through the Nipah virus is low and there is no cause for alarm..
