Mahout trampled to death by temple elephant

TRICHY: A 46-year-old mahout was trampled to death by an elephant at Samayapuram Mariamman temple in Trichy on Friday morning.The temple elephant, Masini , crushed its mahout, Gajendran, inside the temple around 11am when the devotees were moving towards the sanctum sanctorum for worship.“The elephant was brought to the temple at 10.50am by the mahout and tied with a chain. The police personnel have prevented people from entering the temple.The Samayapuram police have taken up the investigation. The video showed the elephant trampling Gajendran multiple times while someone raised an alarm.The forest department officials have brought a Kumki elephant to the temple to control Masini. The temple employees closed the gates of the area to prevent the likely rampage by the elephant.A video footage of the elephant trampling the mahout is also in circulation. The elephant has still been kept inside the temple.The darshan has also been suspended by the temple administration..
