Summary:

MADURAI: The ministry of health and family welfare is understood to have chosen Thoppur in Madurai as the location for the proposed All India Institute of Medical Sciences ( AIIMS ). The minister added that before he said so, the Centre had only considered Madurai as one of the five places in contention. Most significantly, it would benefit people from over 15 districts in terms of medical facilities and also bring many jobs to the region, he added. “When a minister threatens to resign, it gains importance,” he said. The decision is expected to boost Madurai’s economy as it would enhance job opportunities and help the hotel industry grow along with other sectors. The decision is also subject to the realisation of five conditions including four-lane connectivity from the national highway, 20MVA power supply from two different feeders, adequate water supply, handover of land and shifting of transformer..
