Mastermind behind anti-Sterlite protests held

MADURAI: The Tuticorin police arrested S Vanjinathan, one of the two lawyers accused of engineering anti-Sterlite protests in Tuticorin, at Chennai airport on Wednesday night. The arrest happened two days after the Madurai bench of the Madras High court dismissed an advance bail petition filed by him and another lawyer Vanjinathan is a practising advocate in Madras high court’s Madurai bench. The judge observed that the two lawyers, as organisers, could not escape responsibility.“The petitioners (lawyers) do not dispute the fact that they were the leaders (of the protests),” the court said adding, “As many as 13 persons died in the protests. They said they had rendered legal assistance to the protesters.On Monday, the duo were denied advance bail by Justice G R Swaminathan. The petitioners should not stand shy of police interrogation.”.
