Chennai has one tree per 33 residents

CHENNAI: Each person in Chennai has just 0.46sqm of open space and there is only one tree for every 33 people on the city’s roads. But since the roads are narrow and underdeveloped, there is limited tree cover . A report submitted by Care Earth Trust to Greater Chennai Corporation to assess the green cover and open space of the city has said Chennai’s green cover is reducing by 2% every year. Chennai lags behind New Delhi (21.52sqm), Pune (1.4sqm), Bengaluru (2sqm) and Mumbai (1.24sqm) on per capita open space.
