Earthquake felt in parts of Salem district

SALEM: An earthquake measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale was felt in parts of Salem district in Tamil Nadu on Sunday morning, officials in the meteorological department here said.The tremor was felt in places like Mettur , Omalur and Tharamanalam at 7.47am. “People should stay on the open ground if they feel quakes,” she said.The collector said people could contact the district administration on the 24 hours toll-free helpline --1077 -- for assistance. It lasted five seconds.Panicked people ran out of their houses and spent the morning on the open ground.S N Srinivasan, a resident in Mettur, said vessels had fallen off shelves due to the quake.District collector Rohini R Bhajibhakare said there was no report of injuries to people and damage to buildings due to the quake.She asked people not to use elevators and not to stand near hoardings and buildings if they feel quakes again..
