Kodambakkam: Street Vending Committee polls held

CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Corporation held elections to the Street Vending Committee in Kodambakkam zone on Saturday.The elections were held on the corporation higher secondary school premises on the Arcot Road.There are 6,907 street vendors in Kodambakkam zone who have ID cards. Elections were held in just Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, Ambattur and Teynampet. In all other zones, members were unanimously selected by associations,” said an official.But street vendors from T Nagar area said the elections were not held fairly.“Our association in T Nagar was not even allowed to submit application forms for the elections. All the other categories were selected unanimously by the vendors, themselves,” the official said.“Once the elections are completed, by December 15, we will set up the committee that will comprise 15 members. The biggest area is T Nagar ,” said a corporation official in the revenue department.“Out of the six categories, general, OBC, women, SC, ST, disabled, elections are being held only for OBC and women..
