In order to speed up the phase III construction work of the Chennai-Bengaluru Expressway project under the Bharatmala scheme, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has floated a tender.

AS per NHAI estimates, the construction of the four-lane road between Kancheepuram and Arakkonam will cost 858.93 crore.

The 240km-long expressway will pass through various industrial and mining corridors including Sriperumbudur and Kolar Gold Fields.

At present, most vehicles from Chennai take NH-48 and NH-44 route (Vellore-Krishnagiri-Hosur) to reach Bengaluru, taking at least 6 hours 30 minutes for the 350km-journey.

Once the expressway project is complete, travel time is expected to reduce by at least 90 to 120 minutes.

"Even if it was 100km less, this is a four-way compared to NH-48 which is largely six-way after Kancheepuram.

Also, they have proposed to set up a toll gate here.

So more or less, it is going to take the same time,” said G Ganesh, a trucker from Chennai.

A key aspect of this project, the Advanced Traffic Management System (ADMS), aims at uninterrupted traffic flow, real-time info for users, and round-the-clock emergency assistance, said a senior official from NHAI’s Chennai regional office.

“Traffic volume will be displayed at a board near the proposed toll gate.
