Summary:

Once it is approved, work will be completed within a year, WRD officials said. With a view to making use of this resource, the Water Resources Department (WRD) plans to build a check-dam near Attrambakkam, located a few km downstream of the Poondi reservoir in Tiruvallur district. Like many other villages in the district, Attrambakkam too depends on groundwater and the Kosasthalaiyar for drinking and irrigation. The proposed check-dam, a wall-like structure across the 200-metre wide river at Attrambakkam will save water that is released from the Poondi reservoir during the monsoon. A minimum of 20 villages, including Odapai, Poondi, Attrambakkam, Govindarajakuppam and Krishnapuram will have better groundwater levels even during the harsh summer, an official said..
