Girl dies during disaster preparedness drill in Coimbatore college

COIMBATORE: A 19-year-old girl died when she jumped off the second floor of a building during a disaster preparedness drill organised in a private college on the outskirts of Coimbatore on Thursday evening.The deceased has been identified as N Logeswari, a second-year undergraduate student in Kovai Kalaimagal College or Arts and Science at Narasipuram . She was from a village near Alandurai.Though students standing on the ground were holding a net for her to land safely, Logeswari hit the sunshade of the first floor and died on the spot.The girl, who was reluctant to jump off the second floor, was prompted repeatedly by the trainer and finally given a push by him. The girl, who was clearly not prepared for the jump, hit the sunshade of the first floor.She fell motionless on the floor and was rushed to government hospital where she was pronounced dead.The girl had suffered injuries in the occipital region of the head and right neck.Police said about 20 students were given training to jump through an emergency window.Police were questioning the trainer, R Arumugam, and the college principal, L Mala..
