AIDWA to conduct campaign against privatisation of water supply in Coimbatore

COIMBATORE: Members of the All India Democratic Women Association ( AIDWA ) will conduct a door-to-door awareness campaign here to educate people about the ill-effects of privatisation of water supply The Coimbatore Corporation has entrusted a project to provide round the cloud water supply in the city to Suez Projects Private Limited, a French company.Speaking to the reporters here on Friday, AIDWA national vice-president U Vasuki said the association members would start meeting women at their homes and would educate them about the actual impact of privastisation of water supply.“We would start the awareness campaign within a couple of days in the city,” she said, adding that there was no transparency in the project.Pinpointing that the city is getting only 200 MLD of water from the Siruvani reservoir, she asked how it would be sufficient for providing water round the clock to all the households in 60 wards.Questioning the need of giving contract to a private company for 26 years, she said if the corporation did not have the technology to implement such a big project, then it should have signed a contract with Suez just for a couple of years to obtain the technology and to train the officers.Speaking about the importance of doing background research before signing a contract with a company, she pinpointed that the company is struggling in New Delhi to distribute water to all the houses round the clock and “not all the houses get water round the clock.”Reciting the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report which stated that the 2015 Chennai flood was a man-made disaster, she said the state government should let the people know about the role of Suez Private Limited in maintaining the Chembarambakkam lake which flooded several parts of Chennai..
