Bid to start NEET coaching during exams draws flak

Coimbatore: Government schoolteachers and students have raised objections to the state government’s move to inaugurate coaching classes for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) during the ongoing quarterly examinations.The school education department along with a private institute has decided to start special classes to train students for NEET and JEE from Saturday. The quarterly examinations for higher secondary classes started on September 10 and would end on September 22.“How will we prepare for our physics examination which falls on Monday after attending two-day long coaching classes,” said one of the Class XII students, Vaishnavi (name changed), who registered for training classes. In Coimbatore, more than 1,000 students had registered for coaching classes and the classes would be conducted at 15 centres from Saturday.Acknowledging that she needs to do hard work when she aspires to become a doctor, she said it is going to be extremely difficult for her as she needs to study two different syllabi for every subject and take examinations in different patterns. With the introduction of JEE special classes, more than half of the students have registered for special classes and this year, the students will have to compromise their school hours to complete record works, the teachers said.The department should select the students based on their interest and capacity to ensure more number of students enter medical colleges, instead of admitting all the students and imposing two different subjects on them, teachers said..
