COIMBATORE: After inmates in A class cells in Chennai’s Puzhal Central Prison were found using cellphones , searches were conducted in the Coimbatore Central Prison on Sunday. The team was headed by central zone assistant commissioner (AC) Sundarraj raided the blocks of central prison.It may be recalled that some mobile phones and a few mini television sets had been seized from convicted prisoners during earlier searches in the Coimbatore Central Prison.Meanwhile, Mohammed Rafiq, one of the five inmates from the Puzhal Central Prison who was found using electronic appliances to charge mobile phones, was brought to the Coimbatore Central Prison on Sunday morning. However, a team comprising 60 police personnel could seize only a handful of beedi and cigarette packets from the inmates.The searches were conducted as directed by senior officials in the prison department, a few days after Puzhal Central Prison officials removed television and radio sets from the ‘A’ class cells which were misused to charge cellphones.A team comprising both prison and police officials conducted searches in the cells for three hours from 6am..
