Man crushed to death by elephant

Udhagamandalam: A 63-year-old man was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Kootada tea estate at Sholurmattam village in Kilkotagiri on Sunday when he ventured out of his house to attend nature’s call.The deceased was identified as J Samidass, a retired estate worker. His body was handed over to the family members after post-mortem.Senior forest officials visited the spot and handed over Rs 50, 000 to the victim’s family as initial compensation. The incident took place at 4am, when he came out of his house to relieve himself. Seeing him, the elephant, which had strayed into the tea estate area in the Nilgiri eastern range of forests along with its calf, charged towards him and attacked him, said Ramesh, Kilkotagiri forest range officer.Samidass was taken to the Kotagiri government hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead..
