Agri varsity students plant 200 silver oak trees

Coimbatore: Students of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) planted 200 silver oak trees at the Forest College and Research Institute (FCRI) in Mettupalayam to mark the World Forest Day and World Water Day. Elocution and essay competitions for the students were conducted and prizes were distributed. A drip irrigation system was installed to water the saplings.The undergraduate students will maintain the trees and study their growth.“The drip irrigation system marks the importance of water and forest for the sustainability of life on the earth as envisaged by the United Nations agenda,” said a press statement from the university. “It will ensure 100% utilization of water and survival of the seedlings.”The tree planting programme, organized jointly by FCRI and the Water Technology Centre of the university, saw the participation of about 400 students and faculty from the Forest College.TNAU vice-chancellor N Kumar, in his presidential address, indicated the measures to conserve water and its judicious use.It was followed by a programme that focused on the importance of forests..
