Heavy rain swamped the Nilgiris Hills on Sunday

Heavy rains drencged the Nilgiris Hill on Sunday, strong and gusty winds uprooted trees in Ooty and Gudalur.

Rain triggered landslides in several areas; power supply was also disrupted across Ooty for six hours.

This time the avalanche recorded 205mm of rainfall meanwhile Devada and Cherangodu registered 110 and 114mm respectively for 24 hours ending 7am on Sunday.

Ooty received 6.6mm rainfall while Coonoor registered 13mm, Upper Bhavani and Pandalur recorded 128 and 137mm respectively.

Revenue department officials were worried about gusty winds the maximum temperature recorded in Ooty was 13 Celsius.

However the private revetment wall collapsed at Red Hill area but no other major damage was reported Ooty tahsildar Kuppuraj stated ‘’I have alerted disaster management teams at vulnerable spots about landslides and falling trees’’.

Power was suspended at places including Missionary Hill and Kandal for six hours after tree branches tumbled on live wire.

Trees were demolished in Fernhill, Upper, Gudalur and O’Valley but later were removed immediatelt to ensure smooth traffic on the Ooty-Gudalur road.

Meanwhile the district administration requested public to contact control room at 1077 to inform about tress and households at vulnerable spots.
