Covid-19 cases spike in Coimbatore

Summary:

A month-long aggressive campaign of the Tamil Nadu assembly elections, including roadshows by political parties, is now being considered as one of the main causes of the second wave of Covid -19.

Coimbatore district recorded 1038 fresh cases of Covid-19 on Monday, pushing the active cases tally to 6,689, while 1267 patients were discharged from treatment centres.

The cumulative death toll has reached 716 after two persons died of the disease on Tuesday.

A 60-year-old woman died at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, while a 67-year-old man also died of respiratory distress syndrome and bilateral bronchopneumonia at CMCH.

The recovery rate has, however, slipped to 90.03%, despite 1000 plus people discharged for two consecutive days.

The fresh cases have taken the districts` Covid-19 tally over 74000-mark on Monday.

The positivity rate has, meanwhile, touched an alarming high of 29.3%, mainly because just 3,596 RT-PCR tests were conducted on Sunday.
