Residents demand closure of liquor shops; stage protests

The protesters at Kannappan Nagar said that the residential area already had four liquor shops and plans were on to open more shops. Residents of Kannappan Nagar in the city taking part in a protest demanding closure of Tasmac outlets on Monday. After the police arrested three AIDWA members and took them away in a vehicle, other protesters staged a road blockade. Members of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, Congress and All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) backed the protest at Kannappan Nagar. From Kamarajapuram, the police arrested 39 people including 36 women who staged a road roko demanding closure of a Tasmac outlet..
