Carcass of elephant found in Athagarh forest range

CUTTACK: The carcass of a female elephant was recovered from Paikerapur village under Athagarh forest division in the district on Wednesday morning.Forest officials said the female elephant was about 8-year-old. The elephant was found at the backyard of a villager’s house.Though the exact reason behind the death is still unclear, forest officials, however, suspect that the elephant died of electrocution. Still, the exact reason of the death will be known only after arrival of the postmortem report,” said R Das, a forest official.Senior officials of the forest department have started an investigation into the incident. “Prima facie it seems the elephant had ventured into the village in the night to eat vegetables, grown in the fields, and it came in contact with a live electric wire.
