Delhi couple's murder: Uttarakhand court awards death penalty to main convict

DEHRADUN: A court in Uttarakhand 's Vikasnagar town awarded death penalty to the main convict in the murder case of a Delhi couple in Chakrata area in October 2014. On October 24, the couple hired a cab to go to Chakrata, some 135km from the state capital. Moumita hailed from Kalyani in West Bengal while Avijit was the native of Dum Dum near Kolkata. Moumita was a teacher taught at Gurugram’s Pathways International School while Avijit was a painter by profession.The couple had reached Dehradun on October 21 and celebrated Diwali there. However, their families lost touch with them after October 23, 2014.Probing the disappearance of the couple, the police, almost after 18 days, arrested cab driver Raju Das who confessed that he robbed the duo and pushed them off a steep cliff.The couple was staying at a rented house in south Delhi’s Lado Sarai..
