Dehradun: The state police has issued over 5,600 challans and removed over 4,800 illegal number and designation plates from vehicles as part of a month-long drive against such traffic norms violation.In the first 15 days, police have issued 5,649 challans and seized 100 vehicles for flouting norms. They also removed around 4,805 illegal designation plates bearing names of various government officials, political party leaders and the like.Motor vehicle laws mandate that no person shall use names or other tags in the vehicle registration plates. It also states that any unauthorised use of stickers or boards in a vehicle shall amount to violation of the said norms.“We have been running a campaign against people who install name and designation plates in their vehicles. They should know that installing anything other than the registration plate is a violation of Motor Vehicle Act,” said Ashok Kumar, additional director general of police (law and order).In Dehradun, police issued the highest number of 1,245 challans and removed 407 unauthorised plates. “Hence, we have launched a month-long crackdown against such offenders,” he added.Sources said that police have taken action against 3,207 two-wheeler owners and 2,518 four-wheeler owners in 15 days..
