MBBS student at Susheela Tiwari College complains of ragging says seniors thrashed him tore off clothes

Nainital: A first-year MBBS student at Dr Susheela Tiwari Government Medical College and Hospital in Haldwani has complained to the University Grants Commission (UGC) that he was allegedly ragged by his seniors who also beat him up and tore his clothes. If one does not comply, they get beaten up.”Another case of ragging was reported from the college in 2016 but the matter was “sorted out” after the college administration intervened. The institution has set up a 12-member committee to inquire into the matter after the complaint last week. The committee has questioned 100 students in the matter so far.S K Singh, principal in charge of Dr Susheela Tiwari Government Medical College and Hospital, said, “We have ordered a probe and more than 100 people, including students, have been questioned. A meeting has been called regarding the matter on Tuesday.” An official told TOI that the UGC asked the institute to look into the matter in an email after which the probe was ordered.College officials said that the institute has an anti-ragging cell to address such cases, but some students told TOI that ragging was rampant in the college and most victims chose to stay silent out of fear.A student on the condition of anonymity said, “The seniors rag the juniors and force them to do things like abuse or partially strip..
