U’khand eyeing maintenance rights of 28 canals originating in state

“With BJP in power at UP and Uttarakhand, we have got the ownership rights of 37 canals and in response gave UP the ownership rights of eight canals,” he said adding that maintenance rights was a serious issue and deliberations are on in the matter. Dehradun: To ensure that the villagers in the state get water from 28 canals that originate from Uttarakhand and end in Uttar Pradesh, the Trivendra Singh Rawat government is trying for maintenance rights of these canals.Till now, the maintenance rights of these canals are with UP and even for the slightest of repairs Uttarakhand is dependent on the neighbouring state. In case of delay, farmers — especially in Haridwar — are deprived of required water for irrigation.As per the official records, 10 canals of Haridwar district and 18 of US Nagar district originate from Uttarakhand and end in Uttar Pradesh. Raising the question, Congress MLA Qazi Nizam-ud-din said, “It has been 18 years, since the state was created but till now we are completely dependent on Uttar Pradesh for maintenance of these canals.”Irrigation minister Satpal Maharaj added that in the past 18 months substantial development has taken place in the matter..
