SC/ST scholarship scam: HC reverses decision to form new SIT

The state government had replaced the SIT team by a newly formed one on Tuesday. Nainital: Uttarakhand High Court (HC) on Wednesday reversed the decision of inquiry of the alleged multi-crore scam of scholarships given to SC/ST students above class 10, including those in professional courses such as engineering, medicine and business studies by newly constituted special investigation team.The court on Wednesday directed the investigation to be conducted by the previous special investigation team (SIT). Petitioner Ravindra Jugran, a resident of Dehradun, alleged that the Rs 500-crore scam had started around 2004.Jugran also requested the court for a CBI probe under the HC’s supervision into the scam.HC had earlier directed secretaries of home and social welfare department to be present in court in person and explain the alleged multi-crore scholarship scam.In April last year, the state police department had set up the SIT to probe irregularities in SC/ST scholarship scheme after receiving complaints that colleges in Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh had claimed scholarship money from the state social welfare department by showing fake students..
