“Both the local crops are high in nutrients and can easily replace rice which has to be transported from outside. However, we are planning to procure the farm produce at district level and use it in mid-day meals ,” said Pauri district magistrate Dheeraj Singh.Singh added that the meals will have cuisines made from local produce such as jhingora and mandua. “The government is not able to procure crops from local farmers who then have to travel to urban areas to sell their produce in the market. “I have to travel to districts such as Dehradun to sell crops that I grow on my one-acre land. However, if the government makes arrangements to procure my produce at the local level, it will help me greatly,” said Ganesh Ram, a farmer from Pokhra block of Pauri..
