DEHRADUN: A special CBI court on Wednesday sentenced income-tax commissioner Swetabh Suman to seven years' rigorous imprisonment in a 14-year-old disproportionate assets case .The court also sentenced his 90-year-old mother, Gulab Devi, to a year in jail, his brother-in-law Arun Kumar Singh and close associate Rajendra Vikram Singh to four years in jail for abetment. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 3.5 crore on senior IRS officer Suman.The court also came down heavily on 58 witnesses who turned hostile during the trial.In a chargesheet filed in 2010, the CBI had said that Suman "had amassed assets worth Rs 3.31 crore, which were 337% more than his known source of income" . The court ordered that all these properties, with a combined worth of over Rs 3.5 crore, be confiscated, according to the prosecution lawyer.Incidentally, in a separate case, Suman was arrested by CBI while taking a bribe of Rs 40 lakh in April 2018 when he was posted at Guwahati as commissioner of I-T (audit)..
