A major accident has taken place in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand due glacier burst in the Dhauli Ganga region.

Over 150 workers are feared missing after a portion of the Nanda Devi glacier broke off in the Tapovan area of Joshimath in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district on Sunday morning and damaged the Rishiganga dam on the Alaknanda river.

The region that saw huge devastation a few years ago in Kedarnath, seems to have learned nothing from the devastation.

Mother nature tolerates a lot but when it revolts, such devastations take place.

This region has been subjected to a lot of deforestation, construction, and development related work.

The exact number is not yet known but according to State Disaster Response Force DIG Ridhim Aggarwal talking to news agency PTI, more than 150 labourers working at the Rishiganga power project may have been directly affected, washed away.

“Representatives of the power project have told me that they are not being able to contact around 150 of their workmen at the project site,” she said.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat has spoken to officials of the state disaster management and Chamoli administration.

All districts are on high alert and people have been warned not to venture near the Ganga river.

He also appealed to people to not spread rumours through old flood videos.
