NEW DELHI: Chief minister Arvind Kejriwal , who is also the chairman of Delhi Jal Board, on Monday said his government aimed to provide 24X7 clean water supply through taps that would require no RO purification system by 2024 .
At the foundation-laying ceremony of the Rs 599-crore Chandrawal phase-II water treatment plant, the CM said that Delhi was seeking cooperation from the Centre to create mega reservoirs on Yamuna floodplain to store the excess water during monsoons.
Kejriwal claimed that while other parts of country were facing water-related riots, Delhi was planning to meet its future demands.
The ambitious Chandrawal project, which is expected to be completed in another three years, aims to ensure 24-hour supply in the catchment areas, monitored by a central command centre.
Kejriwal said the project would benefit more than 22 lakh residents.“The government is starting the construction of a 47.7 crore litre water-treatment plant at Chandrawal, which will help supply clean drinking water round-the-clock to 22 lakh people living in the command area of this plant.
This include the people of Chandni Chowk, Rajendra Nagar, Civil Lines, Patel Nagar, Karol Bagh and New Delhi, among others,” he said.
The CM said that AAP had inherited a 70-year-old system that was completely mismanaged, corrupt and exploitative of people.
That old system had now been demolished, he added.
“In 2015, only 58% of Delhi`s colonies were connected to piped water network.
The mafia survived because of political nexus and patronage.
