The most common reason for migration is marriage.

The findings of the 2011 census that were released recently stated marriage was the most common reason for migration in India.

The data showed that 46% of the total migrants moved because of marriage and of these, 97% were women.

As many as 20.58 crore women in India migrated for marriage, the data shows.

As per the Census, the total population of married women was 29.3 crore -- which means that 70% of married women had to migrate to another location.

Migration for employment or education

The larger perception is that employment, business or education is the biggest driving force for migration.

Employment or business accounted for only 10% of total migrants, while education accounted for 1.2%.

 With 90 Lakh immigrants as per the 2011 Census, Mumbai takes in the highest number of migrants followed by Delhi with 63%.
