Delhi High Court to revise norms on protecting identity of child victims, juveniles

Delhi | Sunday | 17th July, 2016

Summary:

Nearly two-and-a-half years later, in April 2015, the Delhi High Court asked all hospitals, courts and child welfare authorities in the city to start implementing guidelines to protect the identity of a child victim. The amended Juvenile Justice Act allows children between 16 and 18 years and in conflict with law to be tried as adults in cases of heinous offences. Guidelines to protect the identity of minors involved in criminal cases, laid down by a committee appointed by the Delhi High Court, are set to be revised in light of the amended Juvenile Justice Act. Until January this year, the committee had not received any recommendations about the guidelines from either Delhi Police or the Bar Council. In October that year, the court had issued the first set of guidelines for media organisations, preventing them from revealing any information on the identity of a child victim or juvenile offender..
