Summary:

GHAZIABAD: Nearly 80% of water pipeline and 35% of sewerage pipeline in Indirapuram need immediate replacement. “As per the initial survey, we are planning to replace 35% of sewerage pipeline, including the trunk line, and will introduce a mechanism which would automatically clear it of blockages,” said Khan. “At the core of the problem lies GDA’s polices that led to an increase in population of the township, which as of today is 2.5 lakh, rendering the existing infrastructure redundant and obsolete,” said Alok Kumar, president of the Federation of Apartment Owners Association. The Fed AOA had in 2016 moved the Allahabad high court and later the National Green Tribunal (NGT) to get the problems resolved. The high court had then directed GDA to sort out the issues with the petitioner and further take up necessary work. This has been suggested by a private consultant hired by the Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for overhauling the township’s ailing infrastructure.According to Design Collaborative Consultancy, the entire exercise of revamping the water, sewerage and drainage infrastructure, would cost an estimated Rs 800 crore and will sustain the township for 30 years. The survey report of water infrastructure revealed that 56MLD of Ganga Jal that is supplied in Indirapuram township is unable to meet its water demand.“It has been was found that out of 45 spots, there is little or no water pressure at 27 spots, as a result water hardly reaches the societies,” said Junaid Khan, infrastructure head of Design Collaborative.“We plan to replace 80% of water pipeline with pipes of bigger diameter which will take care of low water pressure problem” he added. As for sewerage infra, the trunk line alone is spread in an area of 2.5km, which is clogged at a number of places. “By end of February, we have been asked to submit the DPR for it,” he added.Indirapuram township is spread in an area of 1222 acres and the existing water, sewer and drainage network was laid in 1990.The GDA had then planned the township to be a low-population density area, but over the years, it had increased the floor area ratio (FAR) amid a real estate boom as the township became an ideal destination for those who came to NCR with jobs and needed affordable homes. The township’s location, just off NH-24, right on the border with Delhi and Noida on the oppsite side, made it a destination of choice for young executives.Due to various other policies of the government, more and more societies began coming up in Indirapuram, leading to an increase in population..
