GDA flooded with pleas to rename metro stations

GHAZIABAD: While the inauguration of the Dilshad Garden-New Bus Adda metro line is awaited, the Ghaziabad Development Authority(GDA) is flooded with requests from various organisations to change the names of metro stations . “There were requests to rename New Bus Adda metro station as Shahid Sthal metro station and Rajender Nagar metro station as Major Mohit Sharma Ashok Chakra metro station,” said Ashwani Sharma, an official in Singh’s office.“While Shahid Sthal metro station will be in the memory of martyrs of the Sepoy Mutiny in 1857, Major Mohit Sharma Ashok Chakra metro station will be in the memory of a martyr in the Kargil War. The proposals have been sent to the state government, which is expected to write a letter to the Delhi Metro in this regard,” added the official.The GDA VC said, “The state government will ultimately be taking a call regarding changing the names of the metro stations.” The 9.41 km-long Dilshad Garden-New Bus Adda metro corridor will have eight stations, namely Shaheed Nagar, Raj Bagh, Rajendra Nagar, Shyam Park, Mohan Nagar, Arthala, Hindon river and Ghaziabad New Bus Adda. According to GDA vice-chairperson Kanchan Verma, the development authority has received around 20 such requests, which have been sent to the UP government for its consideration.These organisations have also placed the requests with Ghaziabad MP Gen VK Singh (retd).According to Singh’s office, the state government has given approval for renaming of two metro stations..
