Seasonal rain surplus jumps to 17

PANAJI: The prolonged rain spell since late Tuesday night pushed the seasonal total to the 60-inch mark and the surplus to 17%.The combined effect of two cyclonic circulations over northeast Madhya Pradesh and north coastal Odisha yielded heavy rainfall in seven centres in Goa.At this stage, 1,277.6mm (50.2 inches) is considered normal. This is likely to continue till 11.30pm on Friday.The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), Hyderabad, has issued an alert regarding the rough conditions at sea.Fishermen are advised not to go out to sea during the next five days. “The wind speed increased due to the two systems and triggered moisture incursion (inducing heavy rainfall),” M L Sahu, director, India meteorological department (IMD), Panaji, said.While Valpoi recorded the highest rainfall of 123.4mm during the last 24 hours till Wednesday morning, Ponda crossed the century mark of 108.8mm. Sakhali recorded 93.2mm, Pernem 90mm, Old Goa 81.6mm, Sanguem 75.6mm and Mapusa 69mm.The other six centres recorded moderate rainfall—Mormugao 63.4mm, Quepem 63.2mm, Panaji 53.5mm, Dabolim 36.6mm, Margao 36.2mm and Canacona 25.6mm.The coast was also hit by high waves in the range of 3.5m-4m hit starting from Vengurla in Maharashtra to Vasco..
