Cong demands arrest of FDA director

Panaji: Keeping up the pressure on the Manohar Parrikar-led government, the state Congress on Saturday demanded the arrest of Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) director Jyoti Sardesai for giving false information about the presence of formalin in fish.Congress also threatened to approach the court if the state government did not initiate action against those involved in the use of formalin to preserve fish. Congress has also exerted pressure on the government by successfully stalling assembly proceedings for two days in a row.“The reports were manipulated by the FDA director and she made a wilful misrepresentation to the people of Goa and willful concealment of the offence committed by the fish traders,” Bhike said.Six days earlier, Congress workers had gheraoed Sardesai in her cabin and questioned her about the discrepancies in the initial spot testing at Margao and the final reports from the FDA laboratory which claimed that formalin was ‘within permissible limits’.They alleged that Sardessai did not comply with the Food Safety and Standards Act, and deliberately provided false or misleading information..
