NIO NITGoa to promote research in oceanography

Panaji: The National Institute of Oceanography ( NIO ) has tied up with the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Goa, to promote research in the area of oceanography among students of technology programmes.The two educational institutions have jointly taken up the challenge of attracting more youngsters towards the study of oceanography. However, the treasures hidden under the ocean can be used for sustainable growth and development. “This may bring in a huge change in the existing way of life,” said NIO director Sunil Singh.Stating that the oceans need to be explored further to tap minerals and gas which can then lead to sustainable development, Singh said, “Few students are interested in the study of oceanography. Following the signing of the MoU, the orientation programme for newly admitted BTech and MTech students was conducted.NIT Goa, which enters its eighth year of operation in the state, has added two new branches for the current academic year 2018-19. Aquatic treasures such as minerals and gas remain unused, which may be used to create energy and that will eradicate the electricity deficit across the country.” He also pointed out to how oceanographic technology can be used to locate the zone of fish under water..
