Traditional festivities take centrestage across villages in South Goa on August 15

MARGAO: Goenkarponn was on full display with traditional Goan sweets like pattoleo, atol, holle, soj, shirvoyio and doce being served to the public in three Salcete villages of Sao Jose de Areal, Carmona and Davorlim on Thursday evening.At Davorlim, participants performed traditional Goan tribal kunbi dance while others sang Konkani and Marathi songs on the stage near the Our Lady of Rosary Chapel that was surrounded by makeshift thatched huts distributing the traditional Goan sweets to the audience. (If they can become saints, why cannot we? )The Parish Pastoral Community (PPC) moderator Dioguinho Fernandes said, "The saints chosen are our patron saints-St Joseph, St John de Baptist, St Francis Xavier, St Anthony of Padua, St Teresa of Child Jesus, St Teresa of Calcutta (Kolkatta), St Joseph Vaz, St Padre Pio and Blessed Sr Rani Maria." August 15 has a special significance to Catholics who also celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Assumption in addition to India's Independence Day.Davorlim chaplain Fr Domingos Noronha told TOI that the theme for their cultural programme was Khuxalkaiechea Umaleani Ekvottan Somudai Ghodo-ia (Let's Build A Community Of Hearts Filled With Joy).At St Joseph's Church, Sao Jose de Areal, the theme was Tanchean Bhagevont zaunk zata zalear amchean kiteak zaina?.
