Summary:

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed with a hotel and some industries from Shristhal and Cuncolim industrial estate to provide on-field training to these candidates. A proposal for expansion had been tendered for Rs3.5 crore in 2012. This however, has been pending due to insufficient funds. Pawaskar said that some hotels and industries approach the ITI for placements and regular job fairs are also held to aid placements. As the centre is getting more students, there is a need felt to expand the facilities. Poinguinim: Starting life in a small building opposite Canacona police station in 1980, the Industrial Training Institute (ITI) for Canacona has now grown into a small hub of activity for many local youth seeking skills in various trades and occupations. The southernmost taluka in Goa, with far flung villages in hilly areas, witnesses migration on a large scale as youth leave their villages for jobs in urban areas. The ITI centre, which was later shifted to the new premises at Mastimol in 1988, is a ray of hope for local youth to get trained for self-reliant opportunities.Speaking to TOI, principal Ravikiran Pawaskar said, “After about seven to ten years after new trades were added, more candidates have joined.” At present, 13 different courses are available here and each of the trades have a minimum 16 candidates and maximum 20 seats.“This year itself we have added over 250 students to the total student strength of 404,” Pawaskar said..
