Summary:

PANAJI: The automation of the highly successful Traffic Sentinel scheme has been completed, with a dedicated mobile app for the initiative set to be launched by the Goa Police on Thursday.Director general of police, Muktesh Chander, told TOI that the app would be launched at the police headquarters. Several citizens registered themselves with the Goa Police to fight the menace of traffic violations.Interestingly, the scheme also found favour with users who refrained from registering themselves, but regularly sent photos of traffic violations to the traffic cell.Earlier this year, the state transport department had launched a citizens’ mobile app titled, ‘Complaint Registration’, which allows citizens to lodge complaints about traffic violations. Two lucky traffic sentinels will win a four-wheeler and a two-wheeler.The app, developed by Goa Electronics Limited (GEL) at a cost of over Rs 20 lakh, will allow registered users to click photographs that will be automatically forwarded to the traffic cell. It allowed citizens to click photos of traffic violators on their cellphones and send them to the police through the registered WhatsApp number. To encourage its use, citizens were given cash rewards for reporting violations. The event will be accompanied by a draw to select the winner of the scheme’s bumper prize..
