8.3% drop in crime last year: Cops

PANAJI: Director general of police (DGP) Muktesh Chander on Monday said that 2018 saw a 21% drop in rape cases from the previous year. Police booked 725 cases under the Gambling Act that year, over 100 up from the 603 in 2017. “Significantly, there was an 8.3% decrease in reported crime in Goa in 2018 compared to the previous year,” he said.He also said that the intensification of the war on drugs led to more cases being booked. Chander said the timely disposal of criminal cases has a positive correlation with deterrence of crime. He said the increased surveillance resulted in 72 cases being filed against foreigners under the Registration of Foreigners Act, up from 46 in 2017.The year also saw an increase in gambling cases..
