Summary:

PANAJI: The latest Economic Survey for Goa has pegged the average number of vehicles registered annually in the state at 80,000. As of December 31, 2018, the total number of such vehicles stands at 13.8 lakh.Transport director Nikhil Desai attributes the spurt to higher individual aspirations. The trend, which has been observed from the 2016-17 fiscal, indicates a considerable rise from the 74,563 vehicles registered during 2015-16.There has, therefore, been a steady increase in traffic on Goa’s roads, with a total of 86,119 new vehicles being registered in FY 2017-18 alone. We will have to create bridges, extend roads and networks; this is already happening in Goa,” Desai says.Interestingly, over half of the 86,119 vehicles registered in the 2017-18 fiscal were two-wheelers. The purchase of private cars and all-terrain vehicles also showed a similar increase, with 20,990 being registered in 2017-18 and a mere 18,267 in the preceding financial year.At 5,158, transport vehicles such as motorcycles for hire, goods vehicles, taxis, autorickshaws, mini-buses and buses (including those of the KTCL) constituted just 6% of the total vehicles registered in 2017-18..
