GMC detects at least 3 cases of diabetic retinopathy daily

Till date, 340 cases of diabetic retinopathy have been treated at GMC.To facilitate better detection rates, machines have been installed at six government health centres. PANAJI: Since 2016, the department of ophthalmology at the Goa Medical College (GMC) and Hospital has renewed its efforts to detect cases of diabetic retinopathy.At the outpatient department, 15-18 diabetes cases are registered daily. Patients detected with diabetes retinopathy are put on laser therapy or other required treatment. All medicines are given free.Part of the therapy includes an injection that must be administered into the patient’s eye. Each injection costs Rs 30,000 and depending on the severity of the condition, the injection may be repeated..
