Summary:

MARGAO: Salcete and several other parts of South Goa went dry on Tuesday after the pipeline supplying water from the Selaulim water treatment plant ruptured at Sonsoddo , Gogol, Margao.Sources said that the rupture in the 1200mm dia PSC (pre stressed concrete) transmission main pipeline led to heavy leakage of water, thereby affecting the operations of the 160 MLD Selaulim water treatment plant. While water supply to Sanguem, Curchorem and parts of Quepem remained largely unaffected, several areas of Salcete, including Curtorim, Margao, coastal belt and certain areas of Verna had to go without water for the major part of the day.Work of repairing the joint to seal the rupture was carried out on a war-footing, and water supply was restored by late Tuesday evening.Assistant engineer, Krishna Dessai, who led the maintenance team carrying out the repairs, told TOI that the major breakdown in water supply that occurred at around 8.30am was repaired by 5.30pm, and the connection was restored soon thereafter..
