Classification in reservation under BC challenged in HC

CHANDIGARH: The Haryana government's rules to make classification in reservation under backward category (BC) on the basis of family income has come under the scanner of the Punjab and Haryana high court. We, therefore, make it clear that the admissions made to the BC category shall be subject to the outcome of the present writ petitions," the bench has ordered.The case would now come up for hearing on July 17. According to them the candidates of BC category getting higher marks in examination but not falling in the lower Rs 3 lakh criteria, are not able to get any benefit, while those much lower in merit are most benefitted due to income criteria. There was no such income criteria in BC reservation prior to 2016 act.The petitioners, who are aspirants for admission in medical courses in Haryana, has submitted that fixation of income limit by the state government is highly unreasonable and arbitrary. The prospectus contains erroneous information in terms of earlier notifications of 1995 and 2000 which according to the respondents themselves has been superseded in view of the Haryana Backward Classes (Reservation in Services and Admissions in Educational Institutions) Act, 2016..
