GUWAHATI: The Gauhati high court on Tuesday ordered the state police to pay Rs 2 lakh as compensation to Ajit Medhi, a city resident, for allegedly detaining and torturing him illegally in 2011.Medhi, a clerk at the chief judicial magistrate's ( Kamrup Metro ) court here, was allegedly picked up by Panbazar Police in connection with a fraudulent case then and allegedly tortured him for two days.Advocate Manab Gogoi, counsel of the petitioner, said, "Besides directing the city police to pay compensation within 60 days, the high court has also directed the state police to set up an inquiry into the matter and fix accountability.".
