Former secretary of art centre held for graft

GUWAHATI: The vigilance and anti-corruption wing of Assam Police on Thursday arrested Chabin Rajkhowa, the secretary of the Srimanta Sankardev Kalashetra (SSK) from 2009 to 2011, on charges of graft. The IGNCA had released the amount to SSKS to organise an indigenous folk theatre festival.The wing had registered a case against Rajkhowa and Dwipen Sarma, the cashier-cum-assistant accountant of the SSK, last year. Rajkhowa was sent to police remand for at least four days for interrogation by a local court.Rajkhowa was arrested in connection with a case where he was allegedly involved in misappropriation of government funds of over Rs 1.1 crore in 2011-12, which had been allotted to the SSK Society (SSKS) under Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts (INGCA). "Sarma allegedly under the direction of Rajkhowa disbursed the amount to an unidentified person without taking any receipt and without making an entry in the cash book," police sources said.Preliminary probes have revealed that the society's bank details had also reflected that despite around Rs 2.5 crore was withdrawn allegedly at the instruction of Rajkhowa, there was no entry about receipt of the same in the cash book or in the ledger book..
