Dokmoka lynching case trial begins

Assam government had earlier requested the case to be shifted out of Karbi Anglong district to ensure a free and fair trial. A special investigation team formed by the Assam Police has named 48 persons, including a minor, in their chargesheet.Following a directive issued by the Gauhati high court last month, the case was transferred to the district and sessions court. On Wednesday, the defence side registered a verbal complaint against handcuffing the accused but the public prosecutor argued that the police were merely carrying out their duties to prevent any untoward incident.Nilotpal and Abhijeet Das were on their way to a popular waterfall in Kangthilangso when they were stopped by locals in the Panjari Kachari village and lynched on suspicion of being child-lifters. GUWAHATI: At least 47 persons, who are accused of lynching sound engineer Nilotpal Das (29) and businessman Abhijeet Das (30) at Dokmoka in Karbi Anglong district on June 8, were produced in the Nagaon district and sessions court on Wednesday.Advocate Ziaur Kamar, who is the special public prosecutor for the case, told TOI, "After completion of the committal proceedings of the case from a lower court in Nagaon to the sessions court on Wednesday, November 8 has been fixed as the next date of hearing.".
