Summary:

"Even if ST status is granted to the six communities, the granting of citizenship to migrants from Bangladesh will upset everything. Moran said BJP promised ST status in 2014 and 2016, yet it took the decision when the central government's term was nearing an end. If BJP thinks it will win over the people with the status, that will not happen," president of All Moran Students' Union, Arunjyoti Moran, said. The six communities seeking ST status are Koch Rajbongshis, Tai Ahom, Moran, Motok, Chutia and Adivasi. "On the other hand we saw the Centre actively pursuing the passage of the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016 which we oppose tooth and nail. BJP will do everything to protect Assam and the interests of the indigenous people," BJP general secretary Dilip Saikia said.Anti-migrant pressure group Prabajan Virodhi Manch convener Upamanyu Hazarika said the decision on ST status for six communities will not mitigate the situation..
