Thousands of contractual workers under Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) have planned to go for an indefinite strike from Wednesday if their jobs are not regularised at the earliest.
For a city which produces 450 tonnes of garbage per day, a strike of this kind would lead to difficult situations for all residents.
Except for water supply, all other services under GMC, including garbage collection and cleaning of roads, will be affected during the strike.
The decision came after thousands of workers staged a demonstration in front of the GMC office on Friday.
“Over 1,500 to 2,000 employees are working on a contract basis.
The city remains clean for the dedicated service of these workers, who were also continuously at risk during the pandemic.
But unfortunately, the authorities do not care about the problems of the workers,” Chandan Sarma, convener of the GMC Workers’ Union, said.
He added that the employees will continue protesting until their demands are met.
The protesters also raised slogans against Guwahati Development Department (GDD) minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya for not taking any initiative for the welfare of the workers.
