Archdiocese of Guwahati celebrates silver jubilee

GUWAHATI: The Archdiocese of Guwahati celebrated its silver jubilee at Jerome Institute on Saturday.Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal congratulated the Archdiocese for its services to the people of the city and the state. It was elevated to the status of an Archdiocese on August 1, 1995, and presently comprises Kamrup (Metro), Kamrup, Goalpara, Nagaon, Morigaon, Hojai and Tamulpur subdivision of Baksa district. "The Archdiocese has served the people of the state for 25 years. It was carved out of the dioceses of Shillong, Tura and Tezpur, the last contributing the largest portion. The president of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India was also present on the occasion.The Diocese of Guwahati was set up by Pope John Paul II on August 16, 1992, with Thomas Menamparampil as its first bishop..
